- REAL provides help for African immigrants/refugees through seminars, presentations, workshops and training. The goals include, but are not limited to:
- Navigate school systems so families can assist their children to succeed in education (for parents/guardians)
- Encourage early childhood education to prepare children to become bicultural and bilingual (for parents/guardians)
- Strengthen family systems to create healthy and well-balanced families (for families)
- Learn the dynamics of acculturation to adjust to the new environment and lead well-adjusted lives (general)
- Explore cultures for self-identity (for youth)
- Navigate the health care systems, benefits and cost-effective health insurance (general)
- REAL provides training for professionals (teachers, social workers or social service providers, health care professionals, legal system professionals) who work with African immigrants/refugees. Among the goals are:
- Assess and address the needs of clients in different acculturation stages (for social workers, social service providers, healthcare professionals)
- Explore dynamics of communities to support abused/battered women (for shelter staff, legal system professionals, healthcare professionals)
- Understand the strategies for successful bicultural adjustment neceesary to assist children in the learning process (for teachers)
- REAL sponsors and encourages community social and cultural events to:
- Bring together members of Ethiopian and/or other African ethnic groups to increase understanding and the valuing of each other's culture and to develop common community goals and strategies to reach these goals
